National Grid utility pole #1 on Kennedy Street in Woonsocket was sheared off at the base just before noon today by a gold colored SUV which quickly left the scene with extensive damage to the vehicle.  This utility pole services all the Internet, Telephone, and transmitter control service for O-N AM & FM Radio.  Miraculously, service was not interrupted and the stations continue broadcasting.

The driver was located within minutes by Woonsocket Police, after large pieces of the vehicle torn off and left behind at the scene led to the identification of the vehicle’s make and model.

National Grid crews are on scene now replacing the pole.  No service outage is expected during their work.

 

Claudette is back to tropical storm strength as it churns about 65 miles outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. It's packing maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and moving at roughly 25 miles per hour as it brings rain, the risk of flash flooding, and possible tornadoes. Meantime, recovery efforts are underway in a Chicago suburb after a tornado touched down near Woodridge last night.       Family members are back on either side of the border after the COVID-19 emergency border closure was briefly lifted over the weekend. Officials allowed the border to reopen for the first time in over a year for those who are categorized as "non-essential" to meet in person with relatives in El Paso, Texas. Everyone got three minutes to meet before returning to their side of the border.       A New Zealand weightlifter is now the first transgender athlete to compete in the Olympics. The New Zealand Olympic Committee has announced Laurel Hubbard will compete in the women's super-heavyweight 87-kg category. The 43-year-old Hubbard competed as a man before coming out as transgender in 2013.       Prime Day is here and Amazon is promising the most deals in the event's seven-year history. The e-commerce giant is rolling out more than two-million deals with markdowns on Amazon devices, electronics, fashion, cookware and much more. However, competitors like Walmart are working hard not to be outdone with the launch of its online Deal For Days sale.       Utah Senator Mitt Romney and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly are proposing a bill that would establish a national wildfire commission. Romney says the commission would research national fire policies and recommend changes and new firefighting strategies. This is an effort to prevent future wildfires from becoming catastrophic.       Protesters turned out in Palm Springs, California, for last night's unveiling of a 26-foot statue of Marilyn Monroe. The Women's March Foundation and several other groups are objecting to what they call the sexual objectification of a beloved Hollywood legend in the "Me Too" era. Local residents also claim the statue infringes on the views of the Coachella [[ ko-CHELL-uh ]] Valley's natural landscape.
