High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island,

Key Dates Announced for Qualifying Quiz and Competition for TV 
 

 

PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND (August 24, 2017) - It's the newest opportunity for Rhode Island high school students to vie for the glory of a championship title. WSBE Rhode Island PBS today announced the key dates for High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island®, its team-based single-elimination competition among qualifying high school students.

 

Team registration by school principals or academic coaches opens on Monday, August 28 at noon, and continues through Friday, September 29 at 2 p.m. All Rhode Island public, private, or parochial high schools are eligible to participate in High School Quiz Show: Rhode Island. The first step is to register a team of four currently enrolled students and at least one adult coach. Complete rules and frequently asked questions, as well as the link to the online registration form, are available at ripbs.org.

 

"As summer winds down and thoughts turn back to classes, we extend the invitation now so principals, academic coaches, and students can plan their strategies and participate," said Rhode Island PBS President David W. Piccerelli. "We invite all Rhode Island high schools to consider this opportunity to build school and community spirit, while celebrating academic excellence."

 

The qualifying quiz will be administered on Sunday, October 15, to the first 24 teams that register. Dubbed "Super Sunday," this event simulates the rapid-paced game show format, with all 24 teams competing separately. The eight highest scoring teams from Super Sunday will advance to a seven-round, bracketed, single-elimination competition, held over two days on Saturday and Sunday, November 11 and 12. The seven rounds will be taped for broadcast on Rhode Island PBS in the spring of 2018.

 

"We are hard at work assembling the right elements to make this a valuable experience and exciting contests for the students, the schools, and their circles of family and friends, as well as our broader community of viewers," said John H. Smith, the show's producer. "We are looking forward to producing great local television and cheering academic achievement."

The hearing to determine if former President Trump has violated his gag order is underway. The order bars Trump from criticizing anyone connected to his New York criminal hush money trial. Prosecutors want him fined three-thousand bucks.       Former National Enquirer publish David Pecker is expected to take the stand in Trump's hush money trial. Prosecutors say he had an arrangement to protect Trump from any potentially harmful stories, especially in the run-up to the 2016 election. Trump is accused of covering up hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels aimed at keeping her quiet about an extra-marital affair.        More protests calling attention to the crisis in the Middle East are happening at a growing number of college campuses. at Columbia University say they want the Ivy League school to divest from companies they say profit from Israel's violations of international law and Palestinian rights. Demonstrations also took place on the West Coast, with police reporting a large gathering on the campus Cal Poly Humboldt.       Severe thunderstorms may bring hail, wind damage and tornadoes to the central U.S. later this week. The first round of weather is expected to hit the Plains and Midwest starting on Thursday. Areas from Northwest Texas to western and central parts of Oklahoma and Kansas will be under the threat of wind damage and large hail.       A high-speed, electric rail line between Las Vegas and Los Angeles is now being built. The route is projected to cut the travel time between the cities from about three-to-four hours to a little more than two. The 218-mile rail line is expected to open to the public by 2028.        Home teams are still undefeated in the NBA playoffs after last night. The Cleveland Cavaliers picked up a 96-86 win over the Orlando Magic while the New York Knicks took down the Philadelphia 76ers 104-101. And in Denver, the reigning champion Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Lakers 101-99.
