        Autumnfest Committee vs Rotary Club in Tug O’ War

 

Woonsocket - “MEGA War", New England’s Largest Tug O’ War Competition is taking on a new twist.  In the interest of good spirit, the Woonsocket Rotary Club has challenged the Autumnfest Steering Committee to an exhibition Tug O’ War.  The pull will take place at 2:30PM during the Autumnfest Tug O’ War Competition on Sunday October 8,, 2017 near the basketball courts.  Woonsocket Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt will officiate this event.  This is surely to be a fun event and a real crowd pleaser!

 

Sporting Events Coordinator Cheryl Savaria is looking for 5 more Adult Tug O’ War Teams. The High School Division is FULL and therefore closed to additional registrations.  With cash awards of $1,000, $500, & $250 plus championship t-shirts, a great way of promoting your business and get cash to boot!  All it takes is one special individual with leadership to organize that 2,500lbs team.  The competition is limited to ten teams.  Teams must pre-register by downloading the registration forms from the Autumnfest.org website under Sports, call 401-527-8959 and mail it in ASAP!

 

The event will be held during the Autumnfest Weekend at the World War II Veterans Memorial Park in Woonsocket, behind the basketball courts on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at 1:00PM, with team certifications (weight-ins) at 11:30AM.

 

MEGA War is a very unique style of tug o’ war event as the participants are starting from either the prone or supine position.  That unique style alone determines the type of participants it will take to become the Autumnfest MEGA War Champions.  The rope utilized for this event is a former tugboat rope used to tow ships.  The starting position required that the pullers either lay on their backs with their heads on the rope and hands on their chest or lay outward on the chest with the feet making contact with the rope.  All pullers positions will be verified before the signal is giving to the starting official. To win the double elimination event, pullers must spring-up, and pull the rope 1.5 feet.  The Competition requires speed, agility, power, stamina and teamwork.

 

Again, the number of pullers shall be determined by the team’s 2,500-lbs.-weight limit. All participants in the High School Division must be students.  There are no co-ed restrictions. This is a double elimination competition.

Former President Trump's criminal hush money trial is back in session today. Jurors are hearing testimony from former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker who has explained this week how he protected Trump from negative stories leading up to the 2016 presidential election while smearing Trump's opponents.       The Supreme Court is considering whether Donald Trump is immune from criminal prosecution for acts he took in office. The case before them today centered around Trump's federal election interference charges. Trump's attorney argued prosecuting a president for official acts "incompatible" with Constitution. The special counsel attorney argued the Constitution does not grant a president absolute immunity.        Severe weather is hitting parts of the Central U.S. today. Large hail, heavy downpours and isolated tornadoes are possible from the Texas Panhandle to southern Nebraska, with wind gusts reaching 85 miles per hour. Forecasters are warning of flash flooding from the heavy rain, and are telling residents across the Central Plains to stay alert for tornadoes.       Stocks are tanking after new economic data is showing a sharp slowdown in growth. Gross domestic product rose by one-point-six-percent in the first quarter, against expectations of two-point-four-percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has been down more than 450 points at times in today's session. The Nasdaq has been down over 200 points at times as well.       The abortion issue was front and center on Wednesday. First, the U.S. Supreme Court heard a case over whether Idaho's near-total abortion ban conflicts with a federal law requiring hospitals to provide patients emergency care. A decision is expected in June. The same day, Arizona's House of Representatives voted to repeal a Civil War-era abortion law that bans nearly all abortions, and the bill now heads to the state Senate.       The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is underway. This week's PGA Tour event is taking place at TPC Lousiana in Avondale. This event marks the Tour's only team event with two rounds of four balls and then two rounds of foursomes.
