City Council Special Meeting - Nov 27 2023

The chairwoman of the Republican National Committee is stepping down. Ronna McDaniel announced early today that she'll give up the post next month, after former President Trump endorsed North Carolina GOP Chairman Michael Whatley for the national job. McDaniel said serving as chair for seven years has been an "honor and privilege."        A U.S. Air Force servicemember is dead after setting himself on fire outside of the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC. Video from the scene shows the man saying he will "no longer be complicit in genocide," and is resorting to "an extreme act of protest," which he said is still nothing compared to what Palestinians have been enduring. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and later died.        The Supreme Court will hear arguments today on whether states have the right to tell social media companies what they can do. GOP lawmakers in Florida and Texas argue that companies like X and Facebook have been quick to tamp down conservative viewpoints. The companies say that laws limiting how they operate violate their First Amendment right to free speech.        Vigils were held around the country over the weekend for a 16-year-old Oklahoma high school student who died after a fight in a school bathroom. Nex Benedict, who identified as nonbinary, died earlier this month, a day after a fight with three girls who were allegedly picking on them at Owasso High School. People held vigils in Benedict's honor from Boston and California to Texas and Oklahoma.        The man accused of murdering a Queens mother in a New York City hotel room is due in an Arizona courtroom today. Raad [[ Rod ]] Almansoori was arrested in Arizona last week and is facing charges for other crimes there, including the stabbings of two women in the Phoenix area. New York and Arizona have been locked in an extradition dispute over the suspect.       The ninth edition of golf's "The Match" is all set for tonight in Florida. It will mark the first time women will play in the exhibition competition. Rory McIlroy [[ mack-EL-roy ]], Max Homa, Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang will compete in a mixed skins format with all four golfers playing against each other for 12 holes as they look to make money for charity.
