Dear Seniors,
On behalf of myself and the Board of Selectmen I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and joyous New Year! Thanks so much to all of you for the incredible support you provide throughout the year to our Senior Center staff, Council on Aging and the Elder Service Group. All of the men and women associated with these groups take great pride in delivering the greatest services possible to our senior population.
As many of you may know, Beth Cornell-Smith recently began serving as the Senior Center’s Interim Director. Beth will be available to all of you so if you see her in the building or in her office stop in and say hello! Beth also serves as Bellingham’s Human Resource Director and has a lengthy career of providing all types of services to our employees as well as retirees. Beth’s background will be enormously beneficial to the staff at the Center and helpful to our seniors regardless of the needs. I will be working closely with Beth over the coming months as we begin the search to hire a permanent full-time Director for the Center. In the meantime, you can rest assured we will not let any of the Senior Center’s needs go unmet.
We look forward to the year ahead and hope you can take comfort in knowing we have a large network of services available should the need arise, all you need to do is ask.

The Council on Aging (COA) had a very successful Craft Fair again this year! I would like to thank the committee--co-chairs, Betty Willey, Eva Gamache & Yvonne Bartlett for all of their many hours of work to create such a successful day! The funds raised will help with new purchases and new programs.
The COA Board is an active Board with several of the Board members involved in programs and the community. Tsune Roberts visits the senior housing at both Depot Court & Wrentham Manner during the week, taking pastry for their bingos and visiting those unable to come to the Center. She has made a positive impact, and we are so proud of all she does. Betty Willey is working with Triad to bring new programs and information to the Center---a worthwhile project. Thank you Betty.

The Bellingham and Franklin Lions Clubs will be sponsoring a Senior Luncheon on Saturday, December 2. This free Luncheon is for all senior citizens of Bellingham and Franklin, and will be held at the Bellingham Senior Center. There will be two sittings, one at 11:00am and another at 1:00pm. Since space is limited, all senior citizens should call or sign up at the Bellingham or Franklin Senior Centers to reserve their place at the Senior Luncheon.
For all programs that you wish to attend, please sign up in advance (at least one week prior) at the front desk or by calling the Senior Center at 508-966-0398. The Senior Center makes decisions on whether or not to hold programming based on the number of attendees who have signed up.

Dear Seniors,
It has been a while since I have had the chance to write a column so I would like to thank everyone who has come out and supported the BESG at all our meals and fund raisers. We try hard to please everyone and I feel we have two of the best caterers around. If anyone has a suggestion about what we can have for meals please let me know. Our meals in November were lasagna and chicken parmesan. The lunch on December 5th will be pot roast, so please sign up by the Thursday before the dinner so we can give the count to our caterer. The Christmas Party is December 19th so sign up early, we hope to see you – it’s always a good time. We have made baskets for you to take chances on as a fund raiser so please support us. We had to cancel our trip to Pennsylvania Dutch but have planned a trip to the Chicopee Hu Ke Lau for a Christmas show, come and join us! We are also continuing our casino trips. You will be receiving your dues letter and menus for next year shortly. Dues covers from January to January. Everyone have a Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year.

OUTREACH BY SHEILA RONKIN
Remember when we sang about driving the sleigh to grandma’s house in the snow for Thanksgiving? Well, guess what, we’ve had close to late summer weather for the last three months! Aren’t we lucky? We haven’t had to put the heat on for most days. I guess that’s over until the end of April or May next year! So guess where I’m going with this introduction?
I would like to let you know that the parameters for applying for fuel assistance have changed and that you might want to see if you qualify for support. As always I remind you, that while you worked, you supported the programs that I write about with your taxes. It’s like putting money in the bank, you only take out what you need when you need It. This winter the forecasters are saying will be very cold and snowy. I would urge you to apply for fuel assistance and SNAP also. Just come into the Center and pick up the sheets that tell you what you need to put together and when you have all of the documents together, call and make an appointment with either Lisa or myself and we will assist you in the processing of your application. One of the benefits of qualifying for fuel assistance is that the program will send out people to help with replacement windows, doors, burners, insulation, and other home things. These things are very costly and quite often prohibit you from being comfortable in your own home. You are not depriving anyone but yourself by not applying. So many of us live on fixed incomes, and each year is harder to make ends meet. These programs were designed for people like us who could use a little extra help at this time in our lives.

VETERANS PENSION: VA helps Veterans and their families cope with financial challenges by providing supplemental income through the Veterans Pension benefit. Veterans Pension is a tax-free monetary benefit payable to low-income wartime Veterans.
SURVIVORS PENSION: Also referred to as Death Pension -- it is a tax-free monetary benefit payable to a low-income, un-remarried surviving spouse who was married to the veteran for at least one year of a deceased veteran with wartime service.
UNEMPLOYABILITY: Individual Unemployability (IU) basically means that the veteran is unable to secure and maintain gainful employment of either a physical or sedentary nature due solely to service-connected disability(ies). If granted, the level of compensation is paid at the 100% rate and the veteran is entitled to full medical care by the VA including dental. The veteran is also eligible for the state annuity.
VETERANS COMPENSATION: Is a tax-free monetary benefit paid to Veterans with disabilities that are the result of a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active service.

SUPPORTIVE DAY PROGRAM

Members can spend as little as one, or up to five days per week, in this program. Healthy snacks and lunch are included. Enjoyment, conversation and gentle exercise are part of each day. Transportation is available at no additional cost for residents. Please call the Supportive Day Program Coordinator, Olivia Mathieu, at 508-657-2711, with any questions.
SAFE NEEDLE DISPOSAL OPTIONS
You may use the large collection container stationed inside near the front door of the Senior Center. Needles, syringes and sharps MUST BE IN A STURDY CONTAINER that is water and puncture proof (such as a coffee can or smaller bleach or detergent bottle) and marked with the universal biohazard warning symbol. Please, No Plastic Bags or Loose Needles! See the front desk if you require a container.
