City to Begin Street Sweeping of Roads and Some Sidewalks
WOONSOCKET, RI: Spring has sprung and the City is excitedly ushering in the season with the launch of its Annual 2018 Street Sweeping Program on Monday, April 16, 2018 beginning in the Fairmount district.
As the City works to officially clear away winter and remnant traces of its harsh weather from its streetscape, city officials expect to collect 25 to 30 percent less waste from the pavement compared to prior years. The reduction is directly attributed to the City’s switch to liquid brine from traditional salt and sand for pre-treating roads in advance of storms.
"We can expect this year’s cleanup efforts to produce interesting results. The reduction in waste collection will translate to a lighter quantity to haul to the Central Landfill in Johnston for disposal," said Mayor Baldelli-Hunt.
Throughout the program’s duration, commercial sweepers will collect sand and other particles from the surface of roads located within the City’s Fairmount, Globe, Bernon, East Woonsocket and North End districts.
Residents are encouraged to remain mindful of the dates scheduled for their respective neighborhood and to plan accordingly. As a reminder, residents whose property abuts a sidewalk should sweep debris into the street prior to when crews are scheduled to sweep their neighborhood. The collective, co-operative participation of residents is essential to ensuring a successful 2018 street beautification program.
Director of the Department of Public Works Steven D’Agostino who oversees the initiative agrees. "Please contribute, your efforts will improve quality of life in the City," said Director D’Agostino.
Street sweeping will begin in all other districts upon completion of the Fairmount area.
