The New Year is upon us along with our individualized commit-ments and resolutions to be better, do better and live better.
What is it about this annual timeline that makes us think about where we are falling short and how we can make up for shortcomings? Whether your plan is to eat less chocolate or be kinder to a neighbor, each of us needs to ask ourselves how we will remain accountable so that we aren’t repeating the same ones next year.
The Senior Center is also making some New Year’s Resolutions, promises of providing extra-ordinary service to our senior community members and of creating and holding space for people to visit, a space that will leave them feeling better about them-selves and more capable of dealing with life’s stress-ors. Who is going to keep US accountable? We hope that anyone who is reading this will be involved in this accountability effort. (Continued on next page)

2018 Looking Back: Craft Fair, Leo, Sr. Prom, Art
From the Director (cont’d. from front page)
The past six months (the amount of time I’ve been at the Senior Center) have been a whirl-wind. Every day I continue to be blown away by the amount of enthusiasm and dedication our vol-unteers have as they decorate, organize our baked goods for distribution, sort through donations, declutter storage bins, prepare gift baskets, serve meals, care for members of our supportive day program, send out cards of healing, and everything else.
The words ‘Thank You’ don’t ever seem to be enough, but I hope to never tire of saying these two words that express deep gratitude from all of us at the Senior Center who benefit from the volunteers’ hours of service. Each of you (and you all know who you are, far too many for me to name) have provided us with service from the heart, something that warms MY heart every day that I step foot into this building.
There is another group of people that has been incredibly gracious since my arrival. The Senior Center staff have spent hours educating me on all things related to the services provided and how things work around here – and believe me, some things are quite complicated. Each of them has made me feel welcomed and supported, and for that I am so grateful.
Our Senior Center family lost a very important member this past month. Gordon Curtis, long-time volunteer and past president of the COA, passed away on December 3rd, 2018. I was fortunate enough to have met Gordon, having sat with him for lunch on a few occasions engaging in a few conversations. Everyone I’ve spoken to about Gordon have shared stories of a gentle man who, for many years, cared deeply about our Senior Center through his volunteer efforts and sound advice. Gordon’s spirit will always remain intertwined with the Bellingham Senior Center’s past, present and future success.
Speaking of future success, we have building expansion plans on the horizon with hopes of having architectural design proposals ready for the Town Meeting in October of 2019. We will be asking for a large sum of money at that town meeting and will need your votes in order to en-sure our tax-paying seniors get their fair share of the Town’s tax pie.
May joy, health and happiness be present in abundance for each of you in 2019, and may the Senior Center continue to be a place that brings you additional joy, health and happiness in the new year.

Happy New Year!
I have to start on a sad note. As I was writing this, we lost a good friend and a tireless worker for the Senior Center, Gordon Curtis. It seems like he had been around forever and we all miss him very much.
If you missed the Christmas Party, shame on you! Everyone had a great time with friends, food, and entertainment. Even Santa showed up!
I cannot say it enough… the BESG Board of Directors you have elected to serve is a hard-working bunch of people that really makes my job as president a very easy job. It’s a pleasure to have such a great Board. I’d also like to thank everyone I’ve asked to help over the past year. We can’t do it all by ourselves — so a Great Big Thank You!
This month brings our trip to Foxwoods on January 17. February 14th will be the Valentine’s Day Party with soup, sandwiches and entertainment…. $5 per person and tickets are available. March 14th is the date for our trip to the Indian Head Resort in NH, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. Join us!
Dues letters went out last month and we invite all and encourage all to stay or become members.
Please remember that all meals are $8 and to sign up at the front desk and get your ticket. February 5th will feature Chicken Parm and on February 28th we’ll have Chicken a La King.

Happy New Year everyone. May this year be the best ever.
We need a lot of happy things this year.
Do you feel that you over-ate this holiday season? Guess what?
We have an exercise program for you. If you have trouble getting to the
floor there is Sit & Stretch, gentle yoga, tai chi, motion to music and several other offerings to help you whittle your middle and become more comfortable walking and moving. There are oth-er programs available. Just check the monthly calendar on page 12. You can always find a day and time that is good for you. Just think, if you attend an exercise program starting this month, you will be swimsuit-ready in June.
The Center is a happening place for seniors. We offer food for the body and the brain. Our discussions in conversational Italian; “The Barbarian Empires of the Steppes” explores two of history’s most fearsome warrior-leaders; another series is different aspects of American His-tory with historian Dr. Gary Hylander; all stimulate your thinking.
We also have our continuing programs like the BESG birthday party once a month honor-ing everyone who has a birthday that month and sharing the special day with other members of the community.
For those who like to gamble, we have trips to Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods. Also includ-ed in the trip is a meal. Everyone who goes has a lot of fun. Our BESG group offers various trips, some are day and some are overnight, check them out.
And last but not least, our Supportive Day Program. This program currently runs three days a week. It is an exciting program for individuals with early stages of either Alzheimer’s or dementia or are fragile and should not stay at home alone, or whose caretakers are working and need someone to be a companion to them. Our program offers activities with just the group, or joining in Senior Center activities. If you have someone you feel would be a good candidate for this program, call Terri Graham at (508) 657-2711.
Have a good month and keep your head and feet dry.
