ALERT: Tax season scams are peaking.  So, when you get any email or even a phone call about your taxes, or questions about your W2 from literally anybody, whether you know them or not, pick up the phone and verify with your known, trusted tax preparer that they actually sent you that email. If you send tax information via email, triple-check that the email address you are sending this to is correct and type it in yourself in the "To" field.

NEVER click on "reply" and attach your tax information, because that reply email address might be spoofed. Want to be 100% safe? Hand-carry your tax info to your preparer and do the tax return in person with them.

Here is a link to the IRS site, with more tax scams you need to watch out for:

Burgers Are Done!

It’s time to start grilling and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) provides the following safety tips while conducting outdoor cooking.

1.     Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.

2.     The grill should be placed at least 10 feet away from the home, deck railings and fences and pulled out from under eaves, and overhanging branches.

3.     Keep children and pets away from the grilling area.

4.     Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grilling surface and in catch trays below the grill.

5.     Never leave your hot grill unattended.

6.     Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

CHARCOAL GRILLS:

1.     There are several ways to get charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.

2.     If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.

3.     Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.

4.     There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord approved for outdoor use.

5.     When you are finished grilling, let the coals cool completely before disposing of them into a metal container.

As always, feel free to contact the North Smithfield Fire Prevention office at (401) 762-1135 Monday through Thursday between the hours of 07:00 a.m. and 05:00 p.m. for any fire safety questions you may have.

NORTH SMITHFIELD EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

Colonel Peter E. Branconnier Director

One of our communites' greatest assets is its young people.

As part of the STEP program, helping students learn about dealing with disasters or local emergencies rounds out family preparedness.

This booklet, as a pdf document, can be printed out helping young people learn how they can help in an emergency.

Kids can help in many ways either by watching out for an elderly neighbor, shoveling snow as part of a neighbor help program, some communities have a CERT(community response training) in their local schools. Even though a CERT team requires those over 18 years of age, junior CERT teams in schools and villages have kids as young as 13 years of age.

It is never to late to learn emergency preparedness. Too many stories are seen on TV today where a 12 year old administered CPR to another young person or an adult. The nationwide “Stop the Bleeding Program" and “You are the Help Until Help Arrives" is being conducted in elementary schools across the nation to students in grade 4 and up.

Get involved and get your kids involved also. They are our future!

Day two of jury selection in former President Trump's hush money criminal trial is underway. When entering the court today, Trump said experts are calling the trial a disgrace and it should have been thrown out a long time ago. He's accused of falsifying business records in order to cover up payments made to an adult film star just prior to the 2016 election.        The U.S. is preparing new sanctions on Iran after they launched a weekend drone and missile attack on Israel. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced the move today at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank's spring meetings. Yellen said her agency will work with U.S. allies to continue to disrupt Tehran's "malign and destabilizing activities."       The University of Southern California is canceling its valedictorian's speech this year due to security concerns. Asna Tabassum will not be delivering a speech after posting links to a website describing the country of Israel as "racist settlers." USC maintains that they are not canceling the speech due to her comments but rather because of the unprecedented risks of harassment and violence that could break out.        America's heartland could see severe thunderstorms today. The storms will continue to make their way across the midwest. Areas in Minnesota to Arkansas are expected to be hit by the powerful storms. Hail, damaging wind gusts and even a few tornadoes are possible in some areas.        A fourth body has been recovered at the site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore. Unified Command says the body was found inside a vehicle at the site on Sunday, with the name not yet released. Eight construction workers were knocked into the water during the incident last month, with two rescued and four recovered so far.        Hall of Fame baseball manager Whitey Herzog has died at the age of 92. The St. Louis Cardinals confirmed his death Tuesday morning. He managed the Cardinals to a World Series title in 1982 as well as appearances in 1985 and 1987. He was named National League Manager of the Year in 1985 and inducted into Cooperstown in 2010.
